Let me just jump into it here and give you the bad news. There are numerous patents on this, which is why you don't see it copied in other products.Īntares was the first company I know to do the linear modelling part, they worked with us to put Mic Modelling in the TASCAM SX-1 Workstation and DM-24 digital mixer. Slate Digital Virtual Mix Rack (VMR) 2.0 by NoteKnotion Sound Quality Ease of use Features Bang for buck Overall: With the advent of the everything bundle I wanted to give some credit to this product since I noticed there was only one review on gearslutz about this particular product.

The Focusrite liquid channel (circa 2008) models those with dynamic convolution - taking a frequency response at lots of different signal levels, and switching between them seamlessly as the input signal level changes. Slate - the virtual mix rack, once fully loaded, is full of great options that may not be exact replicas of an SSL comp or a Neve EQ but are in some ways. Where it gets interesting is the non-linear parts - that's the compression and harmonics. The transient response is "removed" from the source mic with a convolution, and then the target response is added with another. Removing reverb is not the goal - you'd expect to have a dead or controlled vocal booth to record in.Īs for transient response, that is the easy/linear part of the model.

Anyone familiar with the 500 series lunchbox will find that VMRlooks strikingly similar. It’s called VMR which stands for Virtual Mix Rack. They are known for making plugins that are faithful to the analog gear they are emulating, and recently released a new plugin emulating some more of that sweet analog goodness. The problem would be similar to sorting out reverb from direct sound, which neural nets are doing these days… a lot better than any algorithmic or building-block approach. Slate Digitalhas been around for a while now.

Personally if I used UA hardware I would probably use mostly their plugins, but I don’t and really don’t want to get trapped in that ecosystem so I use mostly Slate for my hardware emulation plugins and really like them.AFAIK, that shouldn't be a problem if they're using neural networks.

The VMR modules also have 0 samples of latency, so they can be used while tracking and that is a huge plus for me personally. Slate have great sounding emulations and have most of your staple EQs and compressors (except for the LA2A/3A) and their subscription price is super affordable. The Plugin Alliance subscription has some really great plugins and has some interesting emulations of less common hardware, but just doesn’t have enough of the staple options for me to consider it as an only subscription. UAD have in my opinion the most accurate emulations on the market right now, but their plugins rely on the DSP in their interfaces and both their hardware and plugins are expensive.

They do offer a subscription now though and they do have some industry standard plugins outside of their hardware emulations. Waves plugins are mostly pretty old now and in my opinion their emulations do not hold up compared to the others. In my opinion there isn’t another option that offers the same level of value as the Everything Bundle.įrom my experience the main plugin companies that offer those similar type of analog emulation plugins are Waves, Slate, UAD and to a lesser extent Plugin Alliance.

I assume you mean the Slate Everything Bundle, as Virtual Mix Rack is just one part of the bundle and technically is just a rack for loading the VMR modules that you own.
